Why is Big Data Important in 2022?
Why is Big Data Important in 2021? On average 40 exabytes of data is generated in just one month by a single smartphone user. Every year there are new social media platforms being launched. These platforms are full of user-generated content such as videos, images, groups, public pages, polls and posts. Tools like Google Trends or Facebook Insights create analytic data based on an algorithm. This data is machine-generated data that marketers or business owners may use. This shows you how important big data is for our lives and our businesses in 2021.

What is Big Data?
Big Data is a large volume of data that is created by humans and machines. The analytic data of this can be used to make better decisions in business or be used to make life easier for the average person. To understand why Big Data is important let’s look at some examples of how an average person uses Big Data every day.
Big Data in eCommerce
We use eCommerce websites like Amazon, eBay or Wish to buy things online and these websites will give you what you are looking for based on keywords, category, price, rating or free shipping. Some of these eCommerce websites even collect our emails and send us discount codes and alert us of sales. This is all an example of sorted and organised data by the various companies. This use of big data makes purchasing online way more efficient compared to looking through a catalog book or having to travel and visit a store, then having to get this data such where such an item may be, what brand is best from a sales assistant.

Big Data in Health and Fitness
Big Data has revolutionised the health and fitness industry with smartwatches such as the Fitbit and Apps like MyfitnessPal.
- MyFitnessPal : This platform is an app where you can track your calories, water intake and exercise. It creates reports based on your progress and calculates your daily caloric intake to lose or gain weight.
- Fitbit: Fitbit is a smartwatch that tracks your daily steps and sleep. You download an accompaniying app and you can compare your data with your friends.
You can see how Big Data has been a game-changer in the health and fitness industry. Making weight loss and improved sleep easier and makes food and exercise fun and easier. These platforms use user and machine-based data with users inputting information and the software of the platforms then creates data with that information such as caloric intake, steps, sleeping schedule and results compared to your friends and others worldwide.
Big Data as you mentioned is very important but at the same time, it is important to be able to transform data into information. I am using MyFitnessPal for more than 4 years and I consider an important tool to see my macros and be able to export them into my computer and see where I can improve in terms of calorie intake and also track my workouts.
Fitbit is also very good. It is more basic though. I highly recommend you to try Garmin smartwatches were you will be able to get more data.
